Programme Management

This route is useful when several trades or properties need scheduling together. It gives the owner a clear view of readiness, next steps and the effect of changes rather than a list of target dates without dependencies.

Tell us what needs doing

What the work includes

  1. Define milestones and the required completion sequence.
  2. Link design, approvals, procurement and construction.
  3. Identify access windows and readiness requirements.
  4. Update progress and forecast effects of delays.
  5. Coordinate recovery decisions and phased handovers.

Important decisions

A programme should show dependencies, not only dates. Identify which activities control completion and where there is flexibility. Distinguish a requested deadline from a deliverable plan, then make the decisions and resources needed to support that plan explicit.

Assessment and the project brief

List the work, properties, desired dates and contractors already involved. Explain access restrictions, tenant changes or business events that influence when tasks can take place.

How the project proceeds

  1. Establish milestones and dependencies.
  2. Confirm durations, readiness and procurement requirements.
  3. Agree the coordinated baseline programme.
  4. Update actual progress and forecast completion.
  5. Make recovery or resequencing decisions and manage handovers.

Working in occupied properties

Confirm access and material readiness before each stage. Keep owners and occupants informed when dates move so a revised programme remains practical at the property.

Budget and programme factors

Programme changes can affect preliminaries, repeat visits, storage, overtime and procurement. A recovery proposal needs its cost and quality implications considered before it is approved. Faster work is not always possible simply by adding more people to a constrained area.

Completion and handover

At each handover, identify the areas ready for use and the tasks still scheduled. The owner should know which dates are confirmed and which depend on a remaining decision or prerequisite.

Projects across sectors

Retail estates need work sequenced around trading. Education needs holiday and reopening dates considered. Industrial sites need shutdowns aligned with production plans. Explore the full sector range to connect the project with the premises and its users.

Locations covered

We work across the recorded North East England coverage area, including Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and the wider Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teesside locations. Find your area in the locations directory and include the full property address when discussing the project.

Frequently asked questions

How is a programme different from a task list?

A programme links tasks, durations, dependencies and milestones. It shows how the sequence supports completion and what changes when a task is delayed.

Can a delayed project always be recovered with extra labour?

No. Access, design, materials and the order of work can limit recovery. The options need to address the actual cause and constraints.

What should be reported when a date slips?

Explain the reason, affected activities, forecast completion and the decision or action needed. A revised date alone does not explain the consequence.

Can several projects share one programme?

Yes. A combined view can show shared resources, site access and dependencies while retaining the detailed plan and responsibilities for each project.
