Code of Conduct

Everyone acting for a Participating Business is expected to work lawfully, honestly, safely, fairly and professionally. This Code applies to leaders, workers, representatives, suppliers and subcontractors to the extent relevant to their role.

Tell us what needs doing

Expected conduct

We:

  1. treat people with dignity and respect;
  2. protect health, safety and the environment;
  3. deliver only work we are competent and authorised to perform;
  4. provide accurate information and never misrepresent credentials or results;
  5. protect confidential, personal and commercially sensitive information;
  6. avoid bribery, fraud, collusion and improper influence;
  7. disclose and manage conflicts of interest;
  8. use property, systems and funds responsibly;
  9. compete fairly and respect intellectual property;
  10. raise concerns and cooperate with investigations; and
  11. correct mistakes promptly and learn from them.

Unacceptable conduct

Harassment, discrimination, retaliation, unsafe work, deliberate environmental harm, falsification, theft, bribery, fraud, forced labour, concealment of serious wrongdoing and misuse of information are prohibited.

Speaking up

Concerns should be raised through the reporting route published by the relevant Participating Business. Genuine concerns raised honestly will be treated seriously and, so far as lawful and practicable, confidentially. Retaliation against a person raising a genuine concern is prohibited.

Breaches

Expected decisions and behaviour

People acting for a Participating Business must be honest about identity, competence, authority, availability, price, progress and mistakes; protect people and property; follow lawful customer and site requirements; keep accurate records; safeguard confidential and personal information; use assets responsibly; and challenge conduct inconsistent with this Code. Pressure to meet cost or programme does not justify unsafe, misleading or unlawful action.

No one may discriminate, harass, bully, exploit, falsify time or certification, conceal a conflict, misuse customer access, offer or accept an improper advantage, collude, steal, retaliate or make an unsupported environmental, credential or performance claim. Social media and public communication must not disclose confidential work, imply unauthorised endorsement or damage trust through abusive conduct connected with the role.

Managers explain expectations, model the standard, respond fairly to concerns and avoid rewarding outcomes achieved by improper means. Suppliers are informed of applicable requirements and responsible for their people and chain. A person uncertain about an instruction should pause, preserve safety and seek guidance from the relevant business.

Concerns are triaged according to safety, safeguarding, fraud, whistleblowing, grievance, complaint, privacy or security procedures. Outcomes are proportionate, consistent and documented, with lessons shared without unnecessary identification.

Breaches may result in investigation, corrective action, removal from work, termination of a supplier relationship or withdrawal of authority to act under the Black & White brand. Any response will be lawful, fair and proportionate.
