LEV Examination and Testing

Most LEV systems controlling hazardous-substance exposure under COSHH need thorough examination and testing at intervals no longer than 14 months. Some specified processes require shorter intervals, and system deterioration can make more frequent checks necessary. HSE sets out the distinctions in HSG258.

Tell us what needs doing

Check the position when taking over premises or when the last report cannot be found. A label on a fan is not enough to explain the tested scope, outstanding defects or current due date. Obtain the report and connect it to the equipment actually in use.

What the work can include

The appointment identifies the extraction system, capture points, process and required performance information. A competent examiner assesses the system's condition and performance using relevant examination, measurements and observations of how it is used.

The resulting report explains what was assessed and whether it continues to perform as intended. Findings requiring maintenance, further information or design work need clear next steps. The report is useful when the person responsible for the premises can understand which action is needed and who must arrange it.

Scope and intended performance

The examiner needs a basis for deciding how the extraction should work. Commissioning results, system information and the process assessment help establish that basis. A measured airflow cannot be judged properly without understanding the capture requirement and operating conditions.

Do not confuse room ventilation, duct cleaning and a formal LEV examination. They can be related tasks but answer different questions. A clean duct does not prove effective source capture, and a test report does not remove the need for maintenance between examinations.

Assessment and preparation

Send the address, extraction details, previous reports and the activity it serves. Ask the occupier for commissioning information, substances used and changes to the process. Where you manage the property for someone else, identify who controls the work activity and who maintains the extraction.

Arrange access with the people using the system and explain whether representative work can be observed. Confirm keys, restricted areas and any separate landlord-controlled equipment. Missing records should be raised before the appointment so their effect on the assessment can be considered.

How the work proceeds

We clarify the property and system scope, identify the required information and coordinate the competent examiner's visit. The appointment plan explains any process operation, access and shutdown requirements so the occupier can prepare without guessing.

After examination, the responsible customer receives the report and a clear explanation of outstanding actions. Agree who authorises repairs and communicates operating restrictions. Keep later repair and verification records with the original finding, particularly where the owner funds equipment work but the occupier controls its use.

Cost, timing and disruption

Price depends on system complexity, capture points, access and the information available about intended performance. An examination of a documented unit differs from assessing a network with unidentified branches or changes since its last report.

Arrange the visit around access and the work needed to demonstrate performance. Some tasks require operation; others need safe isolation. Clarify whether cleaning, repairs, additional appraisal or a return visit are included. A quote for the examination should not leave you assuming every defect will be repaired during the appointment.

Sector applications

Managing agents need owner and occupier responsibilities recorded. Industrial premises need the process and materials represented accurately. Education needs access and appropriate supervised operation arranged for workshop extraction.

These are examples within the full sector range. Our service and project offering covers the sectors we serve, with the examination requirement established for each actual system and activity.

Locations covered

We cover Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley, including Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick, Morpeth, Hexham, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Redcar and Cleveland. View all locations.

Provide the complete address and occupier contact. For several properties, keep the equipment references and report dates separate so the right system receives the right instruction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I arrange a test without the previous report?

Yes, but state that it is missing. The examiner needs suitable information about intended performance and may need further appraisal before reaching a dependable conclusion.

Does a test label show everything I need to know?

No. Read the full report for scope, findings and actions. A label is a useful prompt, while the report explains the assessment and any unresolved issue.

How long should the examination records be kept?

HSE advises at least five years for thorough examination and test records. Keep intended-performance information for the equipment's life. Retain repair evidence alongside the finding it addresses.

Who acts on defects in a rented workshop?

Establish the employer's control responsibilities and the equipment arrangements between owner and occupier. The people controlling the activity must know the findings while the agreed party arranges equipment work.
