Begin by identifying which devices need support and what should happen during an outage. Equipment that can shut down safely after a short period has different needs from equipment expected to continue until another power source is available.
What the work can include
The scope can include load and runtime assessment, review of an existing UPS, unit or battery replacement, associated electrical work and the configuration of agreed monitoring or shutdown interfaces. Larger systems may need specialist installation and commissioning arrangements.
Outputs identify supported equipment, capacity and runtime assumptions, relevant test results and maintenance requirements. Access for future battery replacement and any bypass provision are considered alongside initial installation. Disposal of replaced equipment and batteries should be included explicitly in the work package.
Important decisions
Capacity and runtime. Capacity determines the load the UPS can support; battery provision influences how long it can support that load. These are different decisions. Eaton explains this distinction in its UPS technical FAQ.
Operating arrangement. UPS designs handle normal supply and transfer differently. Select the topology and operating mode for the equipment requirement rather than assuming every unit provides the same protection.
Generator and bypass interfaces. A generator and UPS need compatibility assessment. Bypass can support maintenance in a designed arrangement, but the level of protection available while bypassed must be understood. Eaton's generator guidance explains relevant interactions.
Assessment and preparation
List the devices or property systems needing support and describe what you want them to do during an outage. Include equipment power details, the existing UPS model, battery history and any recent increase in connected equipment. The person managing IT or other protected devices should help confirm the requirement.
We assess available space, connection arrangements and access for maintenance. Identify who can authorise a test or temporary loss of protection. A unit chosen for today's load should have its assumptions recorded so future additions can be checked.
How the work proceeds
We agree the property's backup objective, check the connected load and assess the existing arrangement. The scope identifies the UPS or battery work, electrical connection and any separate IT or shutdown configuration required.
Replacement is planned around the people relying on the protected equipment. At handover, the owner or manager receives the supported-load information, relevant test results, operating instructions and maintenance actions. Any reduced protection during maintenance or bypass needs to be explained in terms the equipment users can act on.
Cost, timing and disruption
The load and required backup time shape different parts of the cost. Battery provision, electrical connection, physical space and access can be as important as the unit price. Include removal of old batteries or equipment and any configuration work in the comparison.
Agree a work window with the person responsible for the connected devices. A replacement can require a controlled shutdown or other temporary arrangement, even when the purpose of the completed system is continuity. Testing and user handover belong in that window.

For retail premises, identify the actual business equipment requiring support. For managing agents, ownership of shared UPS equipment and connected systems must be clear. A smaller property installation still needs an explicit runtime objective and a practical maintenance route.

Frequently asked questions
Does a larger battery let the UPS power more equipment?
Additional compatible batteries can extend runtime; they do not automatically increase the unit's load capacity. Both values need checking for the proposed arrangement.
Will a UPS run the equipment indefinitely?
No. Available runtime depends on the system and load. Define whether it supports a short interruption, generator transfer or controlled shutdown.
Can an existing generator be used with the UPS?
The combination needs assessment. Generator characteristics, UPS design and the combined load affect compatibility; matching nominal ratings alone is insufficient.
Who needs to be involved when replacing a property's UPS?
Include the owner or manager, the electrical delivery contact and whoever controls the protected equipment. They need to agree the work window, any shutdown and the checks confirming the required operation afterwards.
