Electrical Thermal Imaging

The service can support investigation of an identified concern, condition review of electrical equipment or follow-up after repair. An owner or managing agent may need clearer information before deciding what further electrical work to instruct.

Tell us what needs doing

Thermal imaging is most useful when it answers a specific question. It shows temperature patterns at visible surfaces; it does not automatically identify the cause of every warm area. The report needs the equipment details and conditions that make those patterns understandable.

What the work can include

The instruction can cover selected distribution equipment or a wider agreed set of assets, supported by thermal images, matching photographs and location references. The survey records relevant operating conditions and areas that could not be assessed.

Findings describe the observed issue and the recommended next step. A repair, further test or replacement proposal follows its own defined scope. This helps property owners understand what the imaging visit has established before approving work on the equipment itself.

Important choices and limitations

A camera records infrared radiation from surfaces in view. Reflective materials, ambient conditions and the equipment's load affect interpretation. A striking image alone is not a sufficient reason to replace a component without appropriate assessment.

The method cannot inspect through a closed metal cover. Access to the relevant equipment must be planned safely by the appropriate specialist. An image of an external cabinet surface does not establish the condition of all components inside, and thermal imaging does not replace a separate electrical inspection and testing requirement.

Assessment and preparation

Provide the address, affected equipment, existing electrical reports and the symptoms prompting the enquiry. Useful details include when the issue occurs, what equipment is in use and whether recent alterations have changed demand. Existing labels or drawings help identify the correct installation.

Explain who can provide access and whether rooms are occupied or managed by another party. Do not remove covers or expose electrical equipment to prepare for the visit. The survey scope identifies the appropriate access method and records any restriction that limits the investigation.

How the survey proceeds

We establish the question and equipment to be examined, agree the working conditions and arrange access. The survey combines images with observations and equipment references. The resulting explanation distinguishes what was seen from what still needs electrical investigation.

Where work follows, the original findings stay linked to the repair record. A later comparison can be useful, provided the operating conditions are recorded and considered. If the equipment was not working under representative demand, the report explains how that affects the findings rather than presenting an unqualified conclusion.

Cost, timing and disruption

Price depends on the amount of equipment, access, travel, report detail and any specialist arrangements. Several small areas with separate keys or occupants can require more coordination than one accessible installation. Missing identification and incomplete records also affect preparation.

An operating installation may be needed to obtain useful information, but access still determines the method. We agree the visit arrangements and any disruption before work. The handover provides the agreed images, explanation, excluded areas and next actions, with repair requirements identified separately.

Sector and property applications

Managing agents need findings connected to the correct property and responsible owner. Residential blocks may involve shared equipment with controlled access. Offices and retail premises need inspections timed around actual use.

The wider service and project range supports all sectors. The investigation is scaled to the equipment and decision, including a targeted enquiry about one installation rather than an assumed full-building survey.

Local coverage

Our coverage spans Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley, including Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick, Morpeth, Hexham, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough.

Access and occupancy are arranged for each property, including buildings managed remotely by a landlord or agent. Wider specialist and multi-site requirements can be discussed against the actual locations. View all locations.

Frequently asked questions

Can a thermal image identify every electrical defect?

No. The method records surface-temperature information under the conditions observed. Other defects require different inspection or testing methods, so the purpose and limits need to be clear.

Does the equipment have to be operating?

Useful interpretation often depends on representative operation and load. The specialist agrees the conditions needed for the particular survey and explains any limitation when those conditions are unavailable.

Can I remove a cover before the visit?

No. Do not expose electrical equipment for the survey. Access is part of the specialist's safe-working assessment and must be arranged through the appropriate method.

Will the report tell me what to do next?

It should explain the findings and recommended action, including where further electrical investigation is needed. Repairs and additional testing are defined separately so the owner can approve an understandable scope.
