Backflow Prevention and RPZ Valves

A letter about an overdue RPZ test, a new appliance or process connection, or missing property records can prompt an enquiry. Explain what the connection serves and what has changed rather than assuming that replacing the visible valve is the complete task.

Tell us what needs doing

Backflow protection addresses water moving the wrong way and carrying contamination towards a supply. The type of protection needed depends on the risk. A device suitable for one use should not be assumed suitable when the equipment or substances downstream change.

What the work can include

The scope can include reviewing the connection and existing device, establishing the appropriate protection route, coordinating notification and consent, and arranging testing or remedial work. It identifies the relevant asset and the person responsible for its continuing maintenance.

The handover includes the work or test record, relevant device information and the next action. For a property manager, those records need to show the actual connection and location so an inherited valve can be managed without reconstructing its purpose from a label alone.

Choose protection for the risk

An RPZ valve is one form of mechanical backflow protection. Water Regs UK identifies its suitability for back-pressure and back-siphonage risks no greater than fluid category 4. Its RPZ guidance explains installation and testing requirements.

It does not provide protection for every contamination category. Establish the water undertaker's requirements before choosing or moving the device. The practical arrangement also needs access for maintenance and testing and must suit the connected equipment's operation.

Assessment and preparation

Send the address, device photographs taken safely, previous reports and any water-company letter. Explain whether you own the equipment, manage the building or occupy the unit. If the valve serves a tenant's process, obtain enough information about that use to support the assessment.

Arrange entry to the valve and identify who controls the supply. Confirm the interruption's effect on occupants or trading and who can authorise additional work. For rented premises, approval for pipework alterations needs to be agreed with the party controlling the property.

How the work proceeds

We clarify the device, use and required task, then coordinate the relevant technical assessment or competent RPZ tester. A request for a periodic test is distinguished from correcting installation defects or adapting the system for new equipment.

After work, the owner receives the outcome and any remaining action. Keep the report with the device information and the required next test date. Water-company consent and reporting requirements are retained in the property record so they remain visible when the manager or occupier changes.

Cost, timing and disruption

The price depends on whether the job is assessment, testing, repair or installation, together with access and associated pipework. Missing records or uncertainty about the downstream equipment can require additional work before the right solution is clear.

Plan any supply interruption with the people affected. Ask whether parts, repeat testing, notifications and report submission are included. A lower-priced test visit and a proposal covering repairs and a changed installation are different scopes and should not be compared as identical work.

Sector applications

Managing agents need device ownership and ongoing responsibilities established. Hospitality premises need equipment connections and trading requirements considered. Industrial premises need the actual process and potential contaminants identified.

These examples sit within the full sector range. Our service and project offering supports the sectors we serve, with the protection arrangement defined for the property and application concerned.

Locations covered

We cover Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley, including Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick, Morpeth, Hexham, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Redcar and Cleveland. View all locations.

Include the full address, access contact and water-company correspondence. For several properties, keep each valve and report linked to its own premises and connected use.

Frequently asked questions

How often does an RPZ valve need testing?

The local water undertaker sets the required interval, with testing at least annually under Water Regs UK guidance. Use the actual conditions and due date for the device.

Can I move a valve during a refurbishment?

Treat relocation as a defined alteration requiring the appropriate notification, installation and testing arrangements. Confirm the route before changing pipework or assuming the previous approval covers a new position.

Does an ordinary check valve do the same job?

Different devices offer different protection. The assessed contamination risk and water undertaker's requirements determine what is appropriate; appearance or connection size is not enough to decide.

What should I do with a water-company test notice?

Provide the notice and existing device records when arranging the work. Identify the due date, reporting requirement and the contact who can approve any remedial action.
