CCTV provides evidence of accessible internal conditions. It does not automatically establish the surrounding ground condition or explain every instance of movement. Where the evidence leaves the repair decision unresolved, agree the additional investigation before committing to a method.

Understand the practical limits
A liner follows the existing route. It does not reposition a pipe laid to the wrong fall or create a new drainage destination. A collapsed section, severe deformation or an obstruction that prevents installation requires a different approach or preparatory repair.
The design must account for the remaining internal bore and the drain's duty. Branch connections also need explicit attention: a completed lining must not leave a connection obstructed. Ask how these connections will be located, treated and checked.
Different lining systems use different installation and curing methods. For an example of the technology, Renoline describes its UV lining process. The appropriate method follows the actual pipe and repair specification; a product's general capability is not evidence that it suits a particular drain.
Compare lining with excavation
Relining is particularly worth assessing where access to the pipe would disturb a busy yard, occupied floor or established landscaping. The comparison must include preparation, access, temporary restrictions, branch treatment and completion checks.
Excavation provides direct access to replace a failed section and correct its position where required. Its cost and disruption depend on depth, utilities, traffic, structures and reinstatement. Some repairs sensibly combine a local excavation with lining elsewhere.
Ask for a recommendation that explains why the proposed method resolves the observed defect. Avoid comparing quotations solely by the length of pipe treated.
Agree evidence and handover before work starts
A clear scope should identify:
- The exact drain section and defect being addressed.
- Preparatory cleaning and any local repair.
- The specified lining method and connection treatment.
- Drainage restrictions and arrangements for affected users.
- Completion inspection and records to be supplied.
- Any remaining defects or excluded runs.
Retain the original survey and completion evidence together. That makes later maintenance and property decisions easier, particularly when the repaired drain passes beneath a shared or inaccessible area.
