What Is CCTV Drain Surveying?

Identify the runs to inspect and the output required. A recording of one accessible section is different from a wider condition report with route references and recommendations. Give the surveyor previous plans and reports, and explain whether the findings will support maintenance, repair or a property project.

Tell us what needs doing

WRc describes CCTV inspection as a tool for structural condition and operational serviceability. The reporting needs to match the intended use, so agree the detail before comparing quotations.

Prepare the drain and access

The camera needs a usable route and visibility of relevant surfaces. Deposits, standing water and obstructions can limit the survey. Cleaning or clearance may be a necessary preparation task, with its scope and cost agreed explicitly.

Confirm access to chambers and any shared land. Keep the area accessible for the team, but do not enter chambers or attempt to lift difficult covers yourself. Tell the surveyor about traffic, occupants and any unusual substances associated with the drain.

Read the findings in context

A useful report identifies the run, direction, inspected extent and observations. It should explain where progress stopped and why. Footage without clear references is harder to connect to a later repair.

Separate structural findings from deposits and operational restrictions. A root mass can obscure the surrounding pipe, for example, so removal and another inspection may be needed before choosing the repair. Similarly, an obstruction at one point does not establish the condition beyond it.

CCTV does not automatically show the ground around the pipe or prove every joint watertight. If the question requires another test or investigation, include that as a separate task rather than assume the camera has answered it.

Turn evidence into an action plan

Ask for recommendations linked to the observed issue. The next step can be cleaning, local repair, assessment for lining or replacement, or further access. Keep the scope of that work tied to the survey finding.

After repair, retain the completion evidence with the original report. This creates a useful history for future owners and maintenance teams: what was found, where it was and what was done about it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a survey be completed through a blocked drain?

The blockage can prevent travel or obscure the pipe. Agree the preparation needed and record any section that remains unexamined.

Does visible damage mean the whole drain needs replacing?

No. The extent, surrounding condition and site constraints inform the repair options. A local solution can be appropriate where supported by the evidence.

What should I receive after the survey?

Agree footage, a written report, location references and recommendations appropriate to the brief. The record should make completed coverage and limitations clear.
