Why Do Pressurisation Units Lose Pressure?

A pressurisation unit maintains the intended pressure in a sealed water system by adding water as required within its control arrangement. The expansion provision accommodates changes associated with the water heating and cooling. These functions are connected but different.

If the system repeatedly needs water, simply increasing the pressure setting or allowing continued top-up does not identify the cause. Persistent make-up can also affect the system's water-treatment arrangement, so the mechanical and treatment records should be considered together.

What information helps diagnosis?

Provide the unit and expansion-vessel details, system drawings and operating records. Note alarms, visible leaks, discharge observations and recent maintenance. Record pressure readings with the operating condition and time, rather than collecting isolated numbers without context.

Identify whether other work preceded the problem, such as draining, component replacement or changes to controls. The assessment may need to consider the wider circuit and the condition of connected equipment, not only the pressurisation package.

After work, retain relevant settings, operating checks and equipment details. Record whether further monitoring is needed to establish behaviour through heating and cooling cycles. A stable reading at one moment does not describe every operating condition.

Is pressure loss always caused by the pressurisation unit?

No. The unit may be responding to a loss elsewhere. The investigation should consider the whole connected system and its pressure behaviour.

Can topping up be used as the permanent solution?

Regular unexplained top-up needs investigation. It can conceal leakage or another defect and affect the system's treatment condition. The repair should address the cause.

What should I tell the contractor before the visit?

Provide equipment details, alarms, the timing of pressure changes and any recent work. Identify affected services, access arrangements and the person authorising interruption.
