Understand what the screen represents
A command to start a fan is different from confirmation that the fan has started. A fan running is different again from a measurement showing the required air is reaching a room. Ask what each displayed value or status actually represents.
The same distinction matters for temperatures and valves. A sensor measures its location, while a valve command describes the requested position. Neither alone proves that the complete heating or cooling system is working as intended. Investigations should connect control information with the physical equipment and occupied space.
Establish ownership of settings and alarms

Avoid leaving temporary overrides undocumented after an investigation. They can conceal faults or prevent the normal operating sequence from returning.
