When Should a Distribution Board Be Replaced?

Damage, overheating, deterioration, unsuitable alterations and unreliable operation all need competent assessment. Missing circuit information, obsolete components or difficulty obtaining suitable replacement parts can also affect the practical repair options.

Report burning smells, visible damage or abnormal behaviour promptly through the site's safety arrangements. A board with unused spaces is not necessarily ready for extra circuits. The available supply, loading, protective arrangements and equipment compatibility also need assessment. Likewise, a full board does not by itself establish that the whole installation requires replacement.

Compare repair and replacement properly

Ask for a clear description of the defect and the options. A repair proposal should identify the appropriate component, the cause being addressed and the checks needed afterwards. A replacement proposal should explain the required capacity, circuit arrangements and any associated work.

Consider maintainability alongside initial price. Parts availability, repeated failures, foreseeable additions and the disruption of returning later can influence the decision. Retain the assessment rather than reducing the choice to the cheapest board supplied.

For example, a damaged component in an otherwise suitable installation may support a targeted repair. Several unsuitable alterations combined with planned new loads may favour a coordinated replacement. The decision should follow the actual findings in each case.

Prepare for the shutdown

List everything supplied by the board and identify essential equipment, shared occupiers and systems that need controlled shutdown or restart. Agree the isolation window, access and responsibility for notifying affected users.

Include investigations of existing circuits in the plan. Testing can identify defects requiring additional work before affected circuits are returned to service. Agree how such findings will be reported and authorised, with an operational contingency for circuits that cannot safely be restored immediately.

If temporary power is needed, have it designed and arranged as a separate controlled supply. Its load, connections and removal must be planned rather than improvised on the day.

Specify the handover

Request accurate circuit identification, the relevant inspection and testing documentation, equipment information and a record of outstanding matters. Confirm which circuits were altered and retain the documents with the building's electrical records. Clear labelling helps future maintenance and reduces uncertainty at the next shutdown.
